This Week In Music: 20/11/13

I was prepared to write about how I hadn't been listening to anything new this week, but as luck would have it last night I stumbled across a few things so that's good.

  • Jake Bugg - Shangri La
I do not know what this name means but I've seen it popping up everywhere (twitter user Harry_Styles being a memorable one). Jake Bugg has a very interesting voice that sounds very country but his music isn't exactly country, if that makes sense. I can see my dad really liking this album once I introduce him to it.
  • One Direction - Diana
I've mentioned multiple times that One Direction was releasing songs to people that preordered their new album, and this week they got this gem. I'm suspecting there will be a lot of controversy from angry feminists and people that like to get their tights in a twist over something that was meant to be positive because of the message of the song. I'm going to write a full album review so maybe I'll go further into detail on that later.
  • Passenger - iTunes Session EP
This is cool because I've heard it was recorded in Toronto! Anyway, it doesn't sound much different to his usual recordings, maybe because his sound is very simple and raw but I still love the EP. This includes a Simon & Garfunkel cover, and a few songs I hadn't heard before.
  • Lily Allen - Hard Out Here
This song is the only new song I'd actually found before last night and I've been listening to it all week. Lily's use of sarcasm and humor in her songs never gets old for me and I'm looking forward to the new album. The video for this song recived a lot of mixed opinions but I'm not going to get into that because there's no point.
  • DWN TWN - Chocolate (The 1975 cover)
I'm pretty sure that's how you write out the band name, this is a really cool cover done by a female and it sounds so spacey so if you like the original song you'd probably like this as well.
  • Bastille - Skulls
This is a new song off their extended version of Bad Blood and it almost sounds like a remix at times with the repeating and echoes. I love Bastille and their trademark almost rapping, eerie, almost dance music so I obviously love this song.
  • Red Kite - Montreal
iTunes single of the week. I was immediately drawn in by the title, you know me. The guitar in this is really cool and then it goes into some weird electronics. A song about messing things up and hopefully getting a chance to fix it.
  • Imagine Dragons - Who We Are
This is their contribution to the Catching Fire soundtrack. It sounds very futuristic and creepy, then has a bit of a marching band thing going on as well as an overall gritty effect. I can't say if it fits the movie or not because I haven't read the books but it's a cool song.

  • Lily Allen - Somewhere Only We Know (Keane cover)
She did this for a Christmas advert, and now that I know that I can just picture people in very nice clothes dancing around in/around a very cosy home. I really like the original, it reminds me of the movie The Lake House. She is obviously killing it, seeing as she's on the list twice.
  • Julianna Lesure - Happily/Home mashup (One Direction/Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes)
This is available to listen to on her SoundCloud, and it's brilliant how she mixed the songs together so smoothly. Plus, she did the cover on ukulele!

That's all for this week, and now the news:

  • One Direction's album comes out on the 25th y'all
Ah, yes. I'm just going to pretend the reason I almost didn't have anything to include this week was not because I had been listening to their leaked album on repeat. Because I definitely wasn't. But there will be a full review up on release day because I'm just that on top of things, not because I have already had several days to digest it. Nope.
  • Walk Off The Earth iTunes Session!
  • I got tickets to see Hedley in Toronto next year!
It's a Christmas present but my mom told me ahead of time to make sure I didn't buy my own tickets. Wishful thinking really works guys, if you read last week's TWIM you'd know I'd hoped a parent would shell out the money to get tickets for me. Weeeeeeeeee!
