OK, so if you were on the Twittersphere at all yesterday, you probably heard a little something about a tweet from the Real_Liam_Payne. He simply tweeted about his liking for the show Duck Dynasty and the family values. It could have been left at this but when does the internet ever let anything go? So people started attacking and saying he was promoting homophobia, racism, etc. and all the controversial and harmful things said on the show (or was it just in press? I have seen probably 2 episodes and barely looked over all the news about it) which was one way of interpreting the tweet. Had I seen it before all this mess started, I wouldn't have taken that from it but a lot of people did. He came on later to say he didn't mean it like that and defended himself which just fuelled the fire more. Most people believe he should have outright apologised and left it there but that wasn't the case. He then left Twitter for a bit while everyone stewed in their hate. He came back on with a giant rant at about midnight my time (5AM if he was in London) about how the media is basically crap and they should focus on real issues and leave him alone, reiterating that he wasn't supporting all the bad that comes with the Duck Dynasty family.
As much as I was refreshing my timeline every 3 seconds to see if he kept going, and to see everyone's reactions/opinions this was all so unnecessary. There are so many ways this could have gone to create a better result but we can't change the way people handle situations. A lot of people got involved, some on his side and some against him and it just got bigger and bigger.
A few things brought to everyone's attention by this whole thing:
- The media does twist people's words for the sake of press, and what Liam said about worse things happening than him liking a TV show was a fair point. All he did was say he liked a show and because his Twitter has so many followers it got a lot more attention than if someone like me had said it.
- He could have handled it so much better. It's evident he didn't think he was in the wrong and he was kinda on a roll with the whole rant but if he had left it alone people would have done the same.
- Pleading ignorance doesn't get taken well. He didn't know that the family had said these bad things until people started accusing him of supporting it. It's clear he doesn't and though his tweet may have been worded in a funny way, he really didn't mean to cause all this. By family values I thought he meant that they're all so close because that's what I've seen on the show.
*As I've said before, JUST SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE MUSIC.
