I must admit I didn't like Little Mix when I first heard them. I can't say I was into the whole girlband thing, but at the same time, there aren't many girlbands at the mo'. I knew of them because of One Direction, and after I gave them a chance, I kind of couldn't get their songs out of my head. When I was in the states this summer I saw the deluxe edition of their debut album, DNA in a Walmart and picked it up on a whim. And now here we are, reviewing their second album.
As a whole, this is a strong album. There are some stand out songs, and some that I can see myself starting to like as time goes on. I'm just going to talk briefly about each song now, in order as they appear on the album.
- Salute
This is the title track, and stands as an anthem for the independent women out there. The military theme through the song is clever and I'm all for a song about girl power. That's a huge thing present in Little Mix's music and each member, they're all for sticking up for yourself to men, to anyone. Not a lot of people are doing that, especially not with the vocal range of this group. - Move
The first single. This song is so catchy, and again, they're presenting themselves as take-charge individuals. They're calling men out on their bullshit. You know you wanna dance, stop trying to look cool and just dance. I sure do when I listen to this. - Little Me
This song is about wishing you'd been more confident, more self-assured as a child. While they talk to their younger self, younger girls listening can take the advice to heart. Speak up, shout out. Definitely wouldn't mind my younger sister looking up to these girls. - Nothing Feels Like You
While they do embrace their strength, they don't dismiss men. As far as I know, all 4 girls are in relationships and I'd be concerned if none of the songs were about significant others. This is a nice song. You may say, "oh just another stupid love song" but love plays a huge part in most people's lives so why wouldn't you write about it just as much as you write about anything else, love is a strong emotion. - Towers
Looking at this title just now, I couldn't think of what this song was about so I played it to refresh myself. It's about a guy not treating said girl right, it's a slow jam and as always, the vocals are stunning. - Competition
This is about two people trying to outdo themselves, trying to be the most courteous and it a very original song concept. The instrumentals remind me of their first album, very jazz/hip-hop. - These Four Walls
Very heartfelt track, to me it sounds like a song about moving out of your parents house in the first verse, and then the second sounds more like a breakup? Or a death? Honestly I don't know, but it sounds very pretty. - About The Boy
A wonderful song, Perrie's solo blew my mind. Wow. It sounds very 90s hip-hop, TLC or something. Genius. I could see it being their next single. I'm dancing listening to it now. - Boy
About not letting a boy push you around, dismissing toxic people from your life. You don't need no man. It sounds very similar to a song but I can't think of which one. Maybe something by Justin Timberlake? I could be way off. 90s. The beginning is acapella (again, I could be wrong) and how cool is that? - Good Enough
This may be my favourite song on the album. It could be related to many situations, and related to by all. Everyone has been in a situation where they've been told they're not enough. I listened to this for the first time on the bus and almost cried in public. If you listen to nothing else from the album, listen to this. It's beautiful, you can hear the pain in their voices and it just rips your heart right out. - Mr. Loverboy
About falling in love, and enjoying it. You want the boy to be yours. The beat on this one is cool. - A Different Beat
This one brings back the military vibe. This one discusses being different, marching to your own drum. I like it. - See Me Now
Reinventing yourself, proving people wrong. Again, Little Mix makes me feel so confident, like I can do anything. I love that. This one also goes military with the drum beat and chanting. - They Just Don't Know You
This has been said a million times in a million different ways, nobody can understand the relationship because they aren't the ones in it.They want to be told that everyone else is wrong about the person they're with, they know that everyone else is wrong. Very 'us against the world' type of thing. - Stand Down
And the last one, ending with the military vibe strong. A song about being strong and not allowing the negativity to get to you. The instrumentals in this one are amazing. And that scatting!
