Review: Hedley | Wild Life

I've decided I want to start posting on this blog every other day, so here's to hoping that actually happens. If you wanna read my opinion's about Hedley's new album, continue.

Being Canadian I think I have an unrealistic idea of how popular Hedley is, because our radio must play a certain amount of Canadian music, so Hedley is played on radio all the time whenever they put out a new song and everyone I know has heard of them. Anyway, I really like them and if they're not popular in other countries, they should be. I'm going to do this in the same format as my last review because I think that was short and sweet and to the point so let's get to the tracklist!
  1. Anything
This is the first single off the album and I've mentioned it before briefly. I like it, the message is good but of course they were a bit cheeky in presenting it, as usual. Not my favourite but I can understand why it's a single: it's catchy.
  2. Crazy For You
This is probably my absolute favourite on the album. It sounds a lot like Daft Punk's Get Lucky, with that 70s feel, very different from anything they've put out before. It's such a tune.
  3. Headphones
I love this one also! I can relate to blocking out the world with music and the beat is so good, I just want to scream along with this every time I've listened to it!
  4. I'll Be With You
They're going on tour early next year, and listening to this I've been picturing how mindblowing it would be live. Do you ever hear a song and just immediately think that? The lyrics are there and yeah, this is also a favourite. Spoiler: the entire album is top notch.
  5. Pocketful Of Dreams
This is the first slow jam on the album, and it's about having everything but not needing anything but your significant other. It reminds me a lot of the majority of the songs on their last album, Storms. Jacob Hoggard's voice on this track is spot on.
  6. Mexico
This is another song that is very different than the usual Hedley music. It has such an eerie, seedy sound and I don't even know how to explain it, you have to go check it out.
  7. Heaven In Our Headlights
Another mid-tempo song with a hard beat, and it ties in with another song called All The Way which is interesting.
  8. Dreaming's For Sleeping
This one is similar to the previous song, with a twist of focusing on the girl. I love when Jacob hits those high notes, it gets my feathers ruffled. It also solidifies the theme that material things can't satisfy you. Life lessons via Hedley.
  9. Wild Life
The title track, very metaphorical and subtly mentioning industrialization, mixed with similies to animals and nature, accompanied by interesting futuristic sounds that remind me of Owl City.
  10. Got Love
Another song that teaches you to forget about money. Just be nice! What can I say, it sounds like Hedley, they have a specific sound that I can't describe. It also cleverly sneaks a Call Me Maybe mention in. Again, a subtle message about industrialization/pollution.
  11. All The Way
This one is very reminiscent of some of the slower songs on Storms such as I Won't Let You Go (Darling) and Heaven's Gonna Wait. It has a turning point part way through the song where the music breaks down and some kind of chant that makes me think of The Lion King comes in, and then the song comes back stronger and it's beautiful and magical and enchanting and other nice words.
  12. Top Of The World
Talks of nature used to explain feelings, the theme is strong. Love makes you feel good. So much talk of natural occurrences as metaphors. Lovely.
  13. Beautiful Girl
Female is way too pretty to be with such a mess. Male doesn't feel worthy, but he still wants her to stay. Very pretty song with lots of piano and tears (mine). A different take on the usual boy wanting to save the girl, the boy in this song is saved by the girl and his heart is protected by her.
  14. Parade Rain
Sound to me like a continuation of Stormy from Storms, the rain still won't get them down. It also has a similar message to Anything, just presented differently. If it wasn't obvious, this song has the nature them woven through it.
  15. Almost Over
The echo/melodies used in this are stunning. Somewhat heartbreaking breakup song with a conclusion that alcohol will replace the loved one.
The 16th song is a remix of Wild Life so I'm not going to put a comment for that one other than the fact that it's pretty sick.
So that's that! All in all I really adore this album and look forward to seeing them in my city this Spring (fingers crossed one of my parents get me tickets for Christmas). I've said it before, but Hedley never disappoints me, they constantly alter their sound but always bring pieces of the old stuff back. And I'm a sucker for a themed album, I must admit. Hope that if nothing else, this post encouraged you to listen to a few of the new songs, if not the whole album!
