Throwbacks

A toast to all the oldie-but-goodies that may or may not still be a part of your iTunes library.

Let's start with music that came out the year I was born (19995)

  • Alanis Morisette - Hand In My Pocket
Was tearin' up the charts! I still hear this on radio from time to time and yeah, I know most of the words.
  • The Remembrants - I'll Be There For You
Also known as the Friends theme song. Brilliant. That show carried me through childhood and I must confess, I had a bit of the lyrics in my Myspace bio at one point. MYSPACE.
  • Green Day - When I Come Around
    Classic.
  • Oasis - Wonderwall
Another classic! 1995 was killer. Now it is used mostly as text over irrelevant photos on Tumblr but it's all good.
Honourable mention to Boombastic, Stayin' Alive, and Cotton Eyed Joe. Bless.

OK now let's get to some music that came out when I was just old enough to pay attention

  • Hilary Duff - Why Not
She is still the queen, let's be real. She was my very first concert at the age of 9. This is off Metamorphosis which came out ~exactly 10 years ago and it is the first album I remember begging my parents to buy for me. I got it for Christmas and put it in my Walkman for probably a year straight. This one is still on my iPod, though I had to borrow the physical CD from a friend because I went through a phase in which I ruined all my CDs.
  • Ashlee Simpson - Pieces Of Me
She had a reality show for a while and I swear I'm the only one that watched it because Newlyweds was on at the same time but I loved Ashlee. This CD is also on my iPod and I still listen to it sometimes. I had a burned copy and I played it when I was falling alseep. Remember that SNL thing? Good times.
  • The Ataris - Boys Of Summer
This is a cover but when I was young my music taste was pretty much whatever my older sister listened to because I assumed she was cool. To this day I adore this song and it needs to be on every summer playlist.
  • Jesse McCartney - What's Your Name?
Y'all know him for Beautiful Soul but back in the day before Limewire I had a program that I can't remember the name of, I found this song on there and it's my favourite of his.
Now when I first started getting into music (also referred to as the Limewire phase)

  • The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down
Not that I knew what this song was about, I just loved it because everyone else did. All my friends thought they were punk-ass kids and we all listened to stuff like this. The version with the screamo, even.
  • My Chemical Romance - I Don't Love You
I told you we were badass. I was 11. I danced to this song at my 6th grade graduation and I hold that memory close to my heart.
  • All Time Low - Coffee Shop Soundtrack
My friend's older sister knew what was hip in the music world so I also knew by association. It's crazy to think I've been a fan of this band for over 6 years, going strong.
  • Daniel Powter - Bad Day
My family used to refer to this as my theme song. I have vague memories of sitting in the back of my mom's SUV driving my older sister and her friends home from gymnastics and hearing this song on the radio. And I loved the video because it starred a girl that appeared on The OC, my older sister loved that show and sometimes she let me watch it with her. I talked a lot about my older sister in this post, sorry.
Finally, the stuff that got me into concerts, when I was deemed old enough to go with friends

  • The Jonas Brothers - Lovebug
My first band crushes, you never forget that shit. I fell so hard and so fast after seeing their 3D movie and then I saw them on tour and then it all went downhill. I will never stop appreciating them.
  • Taylor Swift - Love Story
    !!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Justin Bieber - One Time
He's Canadian and a girl from my school had a Myspace dedicated to him, before he even made it to MuchMusic. I fell pretty hard for this guy too. I should rename this section "when I started becoming obsessed"
  • Allstar Weekend - Journey To The End Of My Life
I was devastated when this band announced that they were no more, they were my first GA concert and they helped me meet so many people and discover so many of my absolute favourite bands and wow. I feel like I grew up with them, I saw them for the first time on the first day of 10th grade and from then on my life revolved around my next concert. Got to see them 7 times before they disbanded.
I was just feeling particularly nostalgic tonight, I skipped out on a lot of things I loved but we don't have the time.
